Renting in Glasgow

Many first time buyers who are interested in renting in Glasgow have difficulties getting into the Glasgow property market and onto that all important ladder. Renting is now becoming more popular in the area as home ownership is increasing in expense. As with anything in real estate, Glasgow property is about location, location, location. But other factors warrant some major consideration as well. For instance, proximity to the city centre, local attractions, transport links, night life, crime rates, etc.

When looking for your first Glasgow flat think about utilities and other expenses, not just the monthly rental cost. It helps to plan a budget. Don’t forget to include any deposits or fees that may be incurred before you move in. Some places require first and last month’s rent and a security deposit. Once you know what you can afford, you can determine if you can go it alone or if you need to seek a flatmate.

O'Neill Property Management can help you find your perfect accommodation and help you sign up with letting agents to receive regular updates and information. When visiting a prospective flat, take someone with you so you get an objective opinion. Don’t go it alone.
If repair work is required, be sure it goes into the rental agreement prior to moving in the flat. Otherwise, you could get stuck living in a rundown location with a landlord that has no intentions of fixing it up. Don’t forget! When it comes to a rental agreement, always check the fine print. How long is the lease? Are their penalties incurred for having to vacate the lease early? What bills and or taxes are you as the renter expected to pay?

When it actually comes time to move into your Glasgow property, take pictures and keep them on file. These can be very helpful in disputing damage claims. Take an inventory of anything that was supplied like furniture or accessories when you moved in so there aren’t disputes when you move out. Date these pictures and this inventory document, and if possible, get your letter to sign a copy.

Before renting in Glasgow, you will also find it helpful to make yourself aware of local laws and ordinances in the area. Is there a sound ordinance that goes into effect after 11 pm? What are the parking legalities? These are things you should learn in advance to make sure than you don’t find yourself caught unaware and stuck with a fine or a fee.
